The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve; and to give His life as a ransom for many.
Humans tend to create pecking orders. We classify the haves and have nots, the privileged and the peons. Those who “matter” and those who do not, those who the world relegates to “easily replaceable cog” status and dismiss as unworthy of attention. Jesus turned this notion on its head for he did not serve those who “earned” the “right” or “privilege,” those who made themselves “good enough” or those who looked and acted “important” or “powerful,” or who would bring Him “prestige” by association. As if anyone could make GOD more prestigious anyway!
He did not give to those who could or would give back or repay Him. He did not serve for accolades and recognition of His good deeds or serve only those who respected and honored Him. He expected no reward or adulation.
He knew He was doing God’s will and following His calling led down the hard path of rejection, loneliness and unspeakable pain. Yet he did it anyway. Not because it made His life easy and pleasant in the NOW, but because He knew obedience to GOD, even in the most difficult and excruciating circumstances would bring many to HIm. His pain and sacrifice was serving a higher purpose, GOD’s true end of relationship with as many as will accept Him.
The road of obedience will not be easy or light. It won’t bring me instant popularity, the understanding of others or acceptance by the masses — even other Christians — any more than it did Jesus.
But it WILL bring about approval of my character and obedience by GOD! It will serve His higher purposes in the long run, whether I understand or see them now or not. If I am to imitate Christ, this is the path I must follow and not concern myself with the approval of others. I must find my approval and acceptance, my identity and purpose in HIM ALONE!
Thank You for loving me and pursuing me, even when others do not — or do so imperfectly in ways that hurt, wound and leave scars. Even when others try to take some of the glory that belongs only to You and gather it to themselves; when they misunderstand and misapply Your principles for their own glory and expect me to give them the portion of devotion that belongs only to You. When they dish out neglect, mental and emotional abuse and dismissiveness — help me keep my eyes on You. Let me set my heart on obedience to YOU, no matter the cost. Let me hear Your voice alone and tune out the distractions of the world and well-meaning Christians who do not see nor understand Your calling on my life, the road You are leading me on. Yet let me hear and accept True Godly counsel where you send it through others who seek Your gain and not their own. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Be strong and courageous for the LORD your GOD will be with you wherever you go.
I am not ashamed for I know in Whom I have believed and am convinced that He is able to guard that which I have entrusted to Him until that day. 2 Timothy 1:12
